The Hicky Legacy
James Augustus Hicky founded South Asia's first printed newspaper in Calcutta in 1780. He was suppressed, prosecuted, imprisoned, and financially ruined — not because his reporting was false, but because it was true. He reported on corruption, colonial abuse, and institutional wrongdoing at a time when such reporting could destroy a man's life.
Bengal Gazette carries forward that founding spirit. We believe silence itself can become a mechanism of censorship — and that journalism's duty is not only to protect the public from falsehood, but from the deliberate suppression of truth.
